Aviation workers in Azores, Portugal will participate in a partial strike starting on March 24; anticipate air travel disruptions.

Aviation workers have announced an indefinite, partial strike beginning on March 24. Workers organized the strike to protest privatization initiatives and other ambitions that could threaten their job security and damage current working conditions. The employees will continue to work regular hours, but will begin refusing overtime or agreeing to shifts on unscheduled days. There is no scheduled end to the strike, but consequential staffing gaps will likely disrupt normal operations of flights departing from and arriving to Azores.

Travel by air, metro, and railways across Portugal will be heavily disrupted by a general strike on December 11.

A general strike on December 11 will cause extreme disruptions to transportation by flight, rail, and metro across Portugal. The strike was called by two of Portugal’s largest unions to protest the government’s proposed revision of labor codes. Flights are expected to run at minimal services, with some providers such as TAP Air Portugal already cancelling flights. Metro and rail services are also expected to be heavily impacted with limited trains available.

Civil servants will participate in a 24-hour nationwide strike across Portugal on October 24; expect service disruptions and delays.

The Common Front of Public Administration Workers, a large Portuguese trade union, organized the strike on October 24 to oppose the government’s proposed salary increase. The work stoppage is expected to impact services in various government sectors, including healthcare, transportation, and port services. The National Federation of Doctors (FNAM) will also strike to coincide with the civil service strike. These unions claim that new government policies are putting the public at risk.

Aviation ground workers will strike intermittently starting September 3 through January 2 across Portugal; flight delays and cancellations expected.

Ground workers associated with the Metal and Allied Industries Union (SIMA) will strike intermittently across Portugal September 3 through January 2. This protest follows extended protests by ground workers in July and August. The first strike will begin on September 3 at 12:00 AM and end on September 9 at 11:59 PM. Further strikes will take place each Friday-Monday during the following weeks until, a final, extended strike from December 19 through January 2.
