Authorities have shut down public transportation in anticipation for Typhoon Matmo’s landfall across China on October 5; expect widespread travel disruptions.

Chinese authorities have shut down public transportation across Hainan and Guangdong as Typhoon Matmo nears landfall around 12:00 PM on October 5 during Golden Week. All flights at Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) have been canceled from October 4 with train and ferry services being suspended as well. Haikou and Zhanjiang will further pause schools, work, and local transport as spillover impacts are expected across Guangxi, Yunnan, and Hong Kong.

Pro-Palestine protestors will strike across the Netherlands on October 7; expect city disruptions.

There will be protests across the Netherlands on October 7 to oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza. This date coincides with the two-year anniversary of Hamas attacks on Israel. The timing is expected to heighten emotions and tensions among participants. Demonstrations will take place at train stations across the country, with large turnouts anticipated.

Student debt protesters will march on October 3 and 17, increasing security concerns

Student debt protesters, including supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters party’s Youth Command (EFF YC), are organizing marches in Pretoria, South Africa, on October 3 and 17. Demonstrators will gather at 12:00 PM at the Department of Higher Education and Training before marching to the Department of Trade and Industry.The protest is expected to attract significant attendance and will be accompanied by heightened security measures

Healthcare workers will strike across Spain on October 3 causing disruptions to services.

Doctors and medical professionals will go on strike all-day across Spain on October 3. The Association for a Medical and Faculty Statute (APEMYF) representing 16 medical organizations failed to reach a deal with the Ministry of Health over reforms. A similar protest by the same organization in June led to thousands of canceled appointments and non urgent procedures.

Pro-Palestine protesters will gather at Porta San Paolo in Rome, Italy on October 4 at 2:30 PM.

Pro-Palestine protesters will cause disruptions throughout Rome, Italy on October 4. On September 22, tens of thousands of people took to the streets across Italy in support of Palestine. Milan and Rome saw the biggest crowds. At least 20,000 protesters turned out at Termini station in Rome, and 60 police officers were injured in Milan. The protests were coordinated by multiple trade unions. It is highly likely the protesters will block roadways, disrupt railway transportation, and engage in clashes with police. 

Civil servants will launch an indefinite nationwide walkout across Uganda on October 1, expect widespread disruptions to government services.

The Uganda Local Government Workers Union (ULGWU) has called for an indefinite  nationwide walkout on October 1 regarding salary grievances. This demonstration may slow or suspend functions in ministries, local government offices, schools, and public services. Pressure on services is already elevated as the National Teachers’ Union has been on strike since September 15 over similar grievances.

Anti-government protesters will gather in Lima, Peru, on September 28 at 5:00 PM; clashes with police are possible.

Peruvian transport workers, civil society organizations, and Gen Z civilians organized the protest to oppose government corruption as well as the country’s pension reform plan. Protesters will gather in front of Plaza Jose de San Martín and proceed to march through city streets. Similar protests occurred on September 20, 21, and 27, in which over 90 police officers, protesters, and journalists were injured. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse these demonstrations.

Exercise caution in Israel after recent drone strike, car explosion, and expanded IDF operations in Gaza.

Israeli military operations in Gaza have intensified in recent days; raising the general security posture in Israel and increasing the chance of further incidents, demonstrations, or disruptions to transport and services. Houthis wounded 22 people in Southern Israel on September 24 after launching a drone attack. On September 25, a car exploded in Tel Aviv injuring two people. Israeli police have identified it as a criminal incident.

Kenya’s Mpox outbreak continues to grow, creating increased health concerns.

Kenya’s Mpox outbreak continues to grow, citing 420 confirmed cases since July 2024. Mpox is an infectious viral disease that causes flu-like symptoms and a rash. Most cases have broken out in larger population areas, such as in Mombasa and Nairobi. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) updated their vaccination recommendations to include Kenya on September 15. The outbreak does not show signs of slowing down.

Bus driver strikes in Manchester, UK from September 30-October 2 will disrupt Bee Network bus services.

On September 30- October 2, over 2,000 drivers associated with the Unite union at Stagecoach, Metroline Manchester, and First Bus Rochdale will walk out after failed pay negotiations. This follows a September 19-22 strike which suspended about two-thirds of Bee Network routes, including school services and routes across South East Manchester. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has stated the strike will cause widespread disruptions.
