A storm system will move through western Switzerland through at least October 2 producing heavy rain, flooding, and potential landslides. Flooding is expected to occur in low-lying regions as well as throughout urban centers including Geneva, Lausanne and Bern. Power outages are expected and disruptions will linger in the days following the storm.
On September 27, Marburg virus disease (MVD) was detected in Rwanda. Twenty cases are currently under investigation with six deaths so far. Marburg virus causes hemorrhagic fevers with a high fatality rate. There is no known treatment or vaccination. The virus spreads through contact with infected individuals, bats or primates, or bodily fluids including saliva, blood, urine, and sexual fluids. Symptoms include chest and abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, and diarrhea.
On October 1st, Hong Kong will see a dramatically increased security prevense during celebrations of National Day. Roughly 6,000 additional security personnel and added surveillance will be used to manage crowds. Checkpoints, travel restrictions, and random searches are all expected.
On September 29, protesters will gather for an anti-racism demonstration at Südplatz in Leipzig, Germany. The far-left demonstration is in response to recent far-right election victories in the states of Saxony and Thuringia. Minor disruptions to travel and a heightened security presence are likely.
On September 28, protests will occur across Portugal in response to the country’s ongoing housing crisis. Protests will occur in Coimbra, Covilha, Far, Porto, and Lisbon, and potentially other cities. Unlawful evictions and rent control are among the main motivators for the demonstrations.
From September 30 until October 2 in France, the General Confederation of Labor will lead other labor unions on strike, affecting many sectors including transportation. The official strike notice is listed from September 30 at 7:00 PM to October 2 at 8:00 am. Demonstrations will occur across France, and in Paris will begin at Place Denfert Rochereau on October 1 at 2:00 PM.
On October 7 at 6:00 PM, protesters will gather on Konradstraße in Leipzig, Germany. The protests will be on the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel. Students previously protested on the Leipzig University campus in May 2024 causing police intervention. Heavy security presence is expected.
On October 5 at 2 PM, protesters will gather at the Place de la Republique in Paris, France. The protest is in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict and will take place two days prior to the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel. Clashes between protesters and law enforcement are likely.
From September 30 to October 1, railway workers from Trenord will go on strike in Lombardy, Italy. Trenord is responsible for railway transportation within Lombardy. The region accounts for approximately ten million citizens.
On October 4 at 4:00 PM, activists will gather at Victoria Barracks before marching to Flinders Street Station for a sit-in protest starting at 6:00 PM to denounce the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Police presence and disruptions on roads and walkways are likely. Minor clashes between police and demonstrators are possible.
