Delaney Russell

Delaney is an Intelligence Analyst Intern at SafeAbroad, serving on the Tactical Intelligence and Special Projects teams. Authorities have reported an increase in chikungunya infections in Nicaragua and advise travelers to take precautions against mosquito bites.

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites, with no specific treatment and a limited vaccine supply. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 2 Travel Health Notice for Nicaragua due to an increase in reported cases, particularly in the capital, Managua. Common symptoms include fever, joint pain, rash, nausea, and fatigue. The symptoms usually resolve within 10 days; however, rare severe cases have led to fatalities. Wearing insect repellent, long sleeves and pants, and remaining inside with air conditioning are the best preventative measures.

Since July 29, wildfires have forced evacuations and disrupted travel in western and southern Turkey; further spread of fires is likely.

Authorities have issued evacuation orders for the cities of Altinoluk, Kumgedik, and Sapadere. Fires are burning in the  Balikesir, Canakkale, and Kutahya provinces, and in the Armutlu and Seydikemer districts. Due to dry conditions, high temperatures, and strong winds, the risk of the fires spreading and further short-notice evacuations remains high. The fires have restricted travel along a section of the Fethiye-Antalya Highway and between Izmir and the Dardanelles, with evacuation orders causing increased traffic on available routes. Smoke from the wildfires is impacting air quality as far as the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.

BernPride celebrations will take place from 12:30 PM–12:00 AM on July 25 in Bern, Switzerland; expect travel disruptions.

Individuals attending BernPride will gather around Waisenhausplatz at 12:30 PM and march through Bern’s city center, resulting in significant travel disruptions. The march will end at 3:30 PM at Bundesplatz, where a large festival will then begin. The festival will include multiple performances, headlined by DJ Jasi Pink. Festivities will conclude at the Nachtrausch Stellwerk Afterparty, which begins at 11:00 PM. With over 10,000 guests expected to attend, the celebrations will generate heavy foot traffic and localized transit delays.

On July 21, Brussels, Belgium, will celebrate Belgian National Day with a parade, fireworks, and concert; heightened security measures are expected.

A Belgian National Day parade will begin at 4:00 PM along Botanical Garden Boulevard, attracting tens of thousands of spectators, including the royal family. At 8:00 PM, a concert and fireworks display will be held in Cinquantenaire Park. Due to crowds and the attendance of high-profile officials at festivities, heightened security measures will be in place throughout Brussels. City officials have advised against driving within the city due to limited parking and road closures and have added additional bus and rail services.  

A 24-hour rail strike will begin in England, United Kingdom, on July 10; expect significant rail travel disruptions.

The strike will affect London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway services, disrupting key rail connections between northern and southern England. The Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association initiated the strike due to discrepancies over rest-day payments. A smaller 24-hour strike involving roster clerks will begin at 12:01 AM on July 9, though the main strike will take place the following day. No trains affiliated with the two companies are expected to run after 7:00 PM on July 10.

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) will occur from July 17 to July 20 in Shanghai, China; expect travel delays.

The 2026 WAIC will take place at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center and the Shanghai New International Expo Center. Each year, the event attracts hundreds of thousands of participants and over 180 exhibitions. Due to the presence of high-profile individuals, strict security measures will be in place, and increased traffic at airports and on public transportation is likely.

Beginning on June 24 at 7:00 AM, AMOTAC transportation workers will protest across Mexico; expect travel delays.

The Mexican Alliance of Transportation Organizations (AMOTAC) has organized a protest in response to workers’ safety concerns. Starting at 7:00 AM on June 24, AMOTAC plans to block highways and major roads throughout Mexico, with the largest blockages occurring in Mexico City. Traffic related to the two World Cup matches Mexico is hosting that day will further strain the country’s transportation infrastructure, likely causing severe congestion and delays in and around Mexico City and Monterrey. 

Staggered rail driver strikes will take place in Alicante and Valencia, Spain, between June 19 and June 30; expect travel delays.

Tram and rail drivers in Alicante and Valencia, affiliated with the Spanish Union of Railway Train Drivers, Independent Railway Union, and Metrovalencia, will strike intermittently from June 19 to June 30. It is anticipated that strikes will occur across multiple days and at key transit times, resulting in delays throughout the entire period. These strikes coincide with separate industry strikes in the region. 

The Wimbledon tennis tournament will take place from June 29 to July 12 in London, United Kingdom; expect heightened security.

The Grand Slam tennis tournament will be held at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London from June 29 to July 12. Armed and plain-clothed officers will be stationed inside the grounds and in areas surrounding the event. Vehicle checkpoints will also be set up along Church Road, Somerset Road, Bathgate Road, and Burghley Road to mitigate threats.  Heightened security measures are expected to cause delays.
