Significant protests are expected in Lima, Peru from July 19-28 as part of the “Third Takeover of Lima. ” On July 14, the government expanded their state of emergency until August 13 due to these protests. Many rights of citizens have been revoked during this time, and the government has given their military control of all security operations.
1 person died and 2 were hospitalized after a stabbing at Diaconal Center De Bakkerij in Leiden, Netherlands at 9:30 AM on July 14. The center is known to be a shelter for the homeless, and the victims were workers there. A suspect was detained in the hours following the stabbing. There is still a heightened police presence in the area as authorities conduct their investigation.
On July 13, students attending Omar Bongo University in Libreville, Gabon began protesting and demanded that their scholarship funds be granted to the students. Students barricaded themselves in university buildings and blocked nearby roadways with burning tires. Police have used force to combat the lock-in, and will continue to be stationed around the university to crackdown on any additional protests.
On July 3, over half a million people in Kyushu, Japan were ordered to evacuate following severe weather. The cities of Kurume, Kumamoto, and Fukuoka have been hit with heavy rainfall, high winds, and increased risk of landslides. Roads and bridges are likely to be flooded and damaged in the coming days.
On July 3, a gas line explosion injured four near the JR Shimbashi Station in Tokyo, Japan at 3:10 PM. Heavy smoke and fire still surround the explosion site, with firefighters attempting to stop its spread. Following the killing of a Parisian teenager by police, violent protests emerged in the Nanterre neighborhood of Paris, France, on June 28. Protestors set fire to cars, threw fireworks at police, and destroyed property. In response, more than 2,000 police officers were deployed to the area, using tear gas to disperse the crowds and arresting at least 31 people. Heightened security and traffic disruptions are likely as the protests continue.
Since June 26, severe storms and flooding in Chile have caused thousands of evacuations and widespread structural damage. Nearly 10,000 people have been stranded, with thousands more displaced. Hundreds of structures have been destroyed, and major evacuation orders are in place for regions including: the Santiago Metropolitan area, Bio Bio, Maule, Valparaiso. On June 21 at 5:00 PM, two gas lines exploded in the Val-de-Grâce area in the fifth arrondissement of Paris, France. A fire is reported to have collapsed part of an affected building onto the street bellow, and has spread to nearby buildings. Seven people have been injured, with four in critical condition.
From June 12 -22, NATO member countries will engage in the Air Defender 2023 exercise. Air Defender will be held in three “clusters”, encompassing portions of German, French, Dutch, Danish, Polish, Czech, and Swiss airspace.
