Incident Details

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites, with no specific treatment and a limited vaccine supply. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 2 Travel Health Notice for Nicaragua due to an increase in reported cases, particularly in the capital, Managua. Common symptoms include fever, joint pain, rash, nausea, and fatigue. The symptoms usually resolve within 10 days; however, rare severe cases have led to fatalities. Wearing insect repellent, long sleeves and pants, and remaining inside with air conditioning are the best preventative measures.
