Travel disruptions ensue in Goppenstein, Switzerland until February 21 after severe avalanche warnings and a train derailment.

Incident Details

A RegioExpress train that runs from Spiez to Brig was derailed by an avalanche on February 16 at 7:00 AM.  Rail services are currently suspended between Goppenstein and Brig until at least February 21. The Canton of Valais is now under a red avalanche warning, which is tier four on a five-tier scale and signifies severe danger. Tourists have been asked to evacuate Orsières due to these avalanche warnings.
