Program Assessment & Accreditation

SafeAbroad’s Program Assessment & Accreditation helps organizations evaluate current operations, identify opportunities for improvement, and demonstrate a commitment to excellence through an individualized roadmap.

What We Evaluate

13 Control Categories

SafeAbroad’s proprietary Travel Risk Management framework highlights the most critical safety, security, and risk management controls of a best-in-class international education program.

195 Measures

Each control category consists of a series of “measures” or considerations through which the program is evaluated. Each measure presents a specific, detailed element of a robust travel risk management program.

Evaluation

Each measure is evaluated against industry benchmarks, peer institutions, best practices, and/or duty of care standards to establish a baseline average score for each control category. This process helps you identify quick wins, strategic improvement areas, and risk reduction metrics.

Maturity Model

The SafeAbroad Travel Risk Management (TRM) Program Maturity Model provides a structured framework for evaluating and strengthening your organization’s health, safety, security, and risk management practices. Following your assessment, your program is placed into one of five maturity levels based on its current capabilities. Most institutions begin at the Gold level, which reflects a strong foundation of established best practices.

How the Maturity Model Works

  1. Bronze: Designed for organizations building the foundation of their travel risk management program. Programs at this level typically have basic safety practices, shared staff responsibilities, and reactive crisis management procedures.
  2. Silver: Recognizes organizations with established safety and security capabilities, documented crisis management procedures, and staff training that supports more consistent risk management practices.
  3. Gold: Awarded to programs that have adopted best practices, proactively mitigate risks, maintain established crisis management procedures, and provide ongoing health, safety, and wellness initiatives for travelers.
  4. Platinum: Represents organizations that use data, analytics, dedicated personnel, and regular crisis training to proactively manage travel risks and continuously strengthen their programs.
  5. Titanium: The highest level of recognition, awarded to organizations demonstrating industry-leading travel risk management through intelligence-driven decision-making, dedicated subject matter experts, and a culture of continuous improvement.
