On July 13, in Libreville, Gabon, university students staged violent protests concerning scholarship funding.

On July 13, students attending Omar Bongo University in Libreville, Gabon began protesting and demanded that their scholarship funds be granted to the students. Students barricaded themselves in university buildings and blocked nearby roadways with burning tires. Police have used force to combat the lock-in, and will continue to be stationed around the university to crackdown on any additional protests.

Violent protests led to heightened security in the Nanterre neighborhood of Paris, France on June 28.

Following the killing of a Parisian teenager by police, violent protests emerged in the Nanterre neighborhood of Paris, France, on June 28. Protestors set fire to cars, threw fireworks at police, and destroyed property. In response, more than 2,000 police officers were deployed to the area, using tear gas to disperse the crowds and arresting at least 31 people. Heightened security and traffic disruptions are likely as the protests continue.

Since June 26, severe storms and flooding in Chile have caused thousands of evacuations and widespread structural damage. Nearly 10,000 people have been stranded, with thousands more displaced. Hundreds of structures have been destroyed, and major evacuation orders are in place for regions including: the Santiago Metropolitan area, Bio Bio, Maule, Valparaiso.  Effects from the flood are expected to linger as the floodwater takes time to dissipate.

Anticipate severe air travel disruptions across Central Europe from June 12-22 due to NATO Air Defender 2023 exercises

From June 12 -22, NATO member countries will engage in the Air Defender 2023 exercise. Air Defender will be held in three “clusters”, encompassing portions of German, French, Dutch, Danish, Polish, Czech, and Swiss airspace. Civilian flights through affected areas will be rerouted and experience severe delays. Exercises are expected to impact thousands of passenger flights over the coming weeks.

On the afternoon of June 7, Police in Colombo, Sri Lanka forcibly dispersed a group of student and faculty protestors outside the University of Sri Jayewardenepura at Wijerama Junction. Students had gathered to demand the release of other student activists arrested in earlier protests. Localized travel and security disruptions can be expected in the coming hours, with the possibility that demonstrations may reform. 

Anticipate residual travel and safety disruptions following a building fire in Via D’Onofrio, Colli Aniene, Rome, Italy on June 2

On June 2, emergency crews responded to a fire in Via D’Onofrio, Colli Aniene, Rome, Italy. The fire was the result of a number of explosions at the construction site, though the root cause is unknown. One person has reportedly died as a result of the fire with at least ten others being sent to the hospital. The fire has reportedly been put out, though the area has yet to be declared safe.
