Airstrikes across the Middle East on February 28 have heightened security concerns throughout the region.

The exchange of airstrikes between Israel, the U.S., and Iran has degraded security throughout the region on February 28. The attacks came amid failed negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. Explosions are reported in Israel and Iran, as well as at/near U.S. bases in Bahrain, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Significant airspace closures have halted most flights over the region. Corresponding U.S. embassies have issued shelter in place orders for Gulf countries as well as in Israel.

The death of a cartel boss and subsequent retaliations on February 22 are raising security concerns across Mexico.

The death of a cartel leader on February 22 is sparking nationwide security concerns in Mexico.  Mexican armed forces killed “El Mencho,” the leader of one of Mexico’s largest cartels. HIs death sparked a wave of roadblocks that are disrupting travel and creating security concerns across the country, with the majority of disruptions occurring in Jalisco. The U.S. embassy in Mexico has advised U.S. citizens to shelter in place across several states. Several locations also saw violence aimed largely to cause disruptions.

Doctors will conduct monthly, multi-day strikes across Spain disrupting healthcare services starting February 16.

Doctors will conduct multi-day strikes intermittently from February 16 to June 19, limiting access to healthcare in Spain. The  Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions called for five separate strikes; the set dates are from February 16 to 20, March 16 to 20, April 27 to 30, May 18 to 22, and June 15 to 19. Emergency services will still be available. Before the round of strikes begins, doctors will protest in front of the Congress of Deputies in Madrid on February 14 at 12:00 PM.

This is expected to have a dramatic impact on wait times as spectators begin flocking to Milan for the start of Winter Olympics in Milan. Guaranteed services are set for between 6:00 AM-9:00 AM and 6:00 PM-9:00 PM.

Major disruptions are expected in downtown Lima, Peru amidst Gen Z protests on January 28.

A Gen Z protest march will proceed through downtown Lima, Peru on January 28. Organizers of Peru’s Generation Z collective group have organized the protest to demand justice for those killed in the 2023 protests as well as greater transparency of the current administration. Protesters will gather across strategic locations in Lima’s Historic Center. Lima is still under a state of emergency, which brings more security forces onto the streets. The march is expected to attract thousands to tens of thousands of protesters.
