2026 Annual Safety & Risk Forecast for International Education

Over the past year, our team has monitored the myriad of risks that impacted the health, safety, and well-being of student travelers abroad. Since January, SafeAbroad Analysts have logged over 7,000 incidents spanning travel, security, protests, health, disasters, and weather across more than 100 countries. Through this comprehensive lens, our team crafted this year’s Annual Safety Report for International Education, offering a guide for programs to navigate the risks and liabilities associated with international travel and education.

Aviation ground workers will strike intermittently starting September 3 through January 2 across Portugal; flight delays and cancellations expected.

Ground workers associated with the Metal and Allied Industries Union (SIMA) will strike intermittently across Portugal September 3 through January 2. This protest follows extended protests by ground workers in July and August. The first strike will begin on September 3 at 12:00 AM and end on September 9 at 11:59 PM. Further strikes will take place each Friday-Monday during the following weeks until, a final, extended strike from December 19 through January 2.

Typhoon Podul will make landfall in southeastern Taiwan on August 13; flooding, landslides, and essential service disruptions are possible.

Typhoon Podul (Yangliu) is forecast to make landfall near Hualien and Taitung early on August 13, and will later move northwest towards China. Kaohsiung city, Hualien, Pingtung, and Taitung counties will all be affected. Winds of up to 96 mph and at least 24 inches of rainfall are expected. Flash floods and landslides are possible. Typhoon Podul’s trajectory and intensity may change with short notice.

Baggage handling workers associated with Ryanair Group Airlines will strike across Spain August 15-17; further strikes possible.

Azul Handling ground workers, who provide ground handling services for Ryanair Group airlines, will strike August 15-17 from 5:00 AM-9:00 AM, 12:00 PM-3:00 PM, and 9:00 PM-11:59 PM. Should Azul Handling not come to a resolution with striking workers by the 17th, the work stoppages will continue every following Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday until December 31 during the same timeframes. Flight delays are expected, and cancellations are possible.

Follow evacuation orders and expect significant disruptions over the coming hours amidst an ongoing wildfire near Canakkale, Turkey.

A fire began to the east of Canakkale city early on August 8 and has spread rapidly due to the extreme heat. Firefighting operations are ongoing, and evacuation orders have been issued for parts of the city. Further evacuation orders are possible, and short-notice road closures and traffic diversions are expected.

Anti-immigration protesters and counter-protesters will gather across the UK on August 2 and 8; further protests expected.

Far-right groups will gather for anti-immigrant protests across the UK on August 2 and 8, and further protests are expected throughout August. Demonstrators will gather outside hotels supposedly accommodating asylum seekers. The protests began after a violent protest Epping on July 13, which has inspired a series of protests and counter-protests.

Anti-government protesters will gather on August 2 between 12:00 PM and 9:00 PM near the Victory Monument in Bangkok, Thailand.

Protesters calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and expressing support for the Thai Army in the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict will gather from 12:00 PM-9:00 PM near Victory Monument on August 2. The protest is being organized by the Ruam Palang Phaendin group. A protest organized by the same group on June 28 was attended by 150,000 people.

Nationwide ground worker strike on July 25-28 is expected to cause flight delays and cancellations across Portugal; further strikes expected.

Menzies Aviation ground workers associated with the Metallurgical and Related Industries Union (SIMA) will strike nationwide from 12:00 AM July 25-11:59 PM July 28. This is the first of five strikes, which will be held during subsequent weekends through August. The strike is being organized to demand improved wages and working conditions, and is expected to cause delays and flight cancellations across the country. 

Exercise increased caution over the coming days amidst anti-government unrest after clashes between police and protesters in Kenya.

On July 7, at least 31 people were killed and hundreds injured after police opened fire during nationwide demonstrations commemorating the 1990 ‘Saba Saba Peoples March.’ Other anti-government demonstrations throughout June have led to road blockades and violent clashes between police and protesters. Further protests are likely over the coming days amidst anger and unrest. 

The Department of State has warned that road blockades and clashes may occur during Ashura commemorations on July 6 across Nigeria.

On July 6, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) will hold demonstrations in commemoration of Ashura, a day of mourning. Though intended to be peaceful, past IMN activities have resulted in road blockades and physical altercations. Possible demonstration locations include: Fouad Lababidi Mosque, National Mosque on Constitution Avenue, Eagle Square and Unity Fountain on Shehu Shagari Way, Banex Plaza, and Berger Junction in Abuja.
