SafeAbroad Leads Discussion on Student Mental Health Abroad at NAFSA 2026 Biregional I & XII Conference

Date

Seattle, WA — SafeAbroad, a global risk intelligence and safety partner for education abroad programs, successfully presented “Less Crises & More Prevention: Rethinking Student Mental Health Abroad” at the NAFSA 2026 Biregional I & XII Conference in Seattle, Washington, on October 20, 2026. The interactive session brought together education abroad professionals to explore how institutions can move beyond reactive crisis management by adopting preventive, risk-informed approaches to supporting student mental health abroad.

Held during the conference’s “Brewing Global Connections” theme, the session encouraged participants to examine how prevention, collaboration, and shared responsibility can strengthen institutional duty of care while creating safer, more resilient international education programs.

The presentation attracted a diverse audience, with participants representing colleges and universities, study abroad providers, and health, safety, and risk management organizations. Live audience polling revealed that attendees were primarily seeking practical prevention strategies, earlier recognition of student concerns, greater confidence among faculty and staff, and stronger institutional cultures that support student mental health.

Interactive discussions throughout the session highlighted many of the challenges institutions continue to face, including communication across time zones and international partners, recognizing early warning signs before concerns escalate, encouraging students to disclose mental health needs, improving awareness of available resources, and clarifying roles and escalation pathways among campus and overseas stakeholders. These conversations reinforced the importance of viewing student mental health not solely as a wellness issue, but as a fundamental component of institutional risk management and program resilience.

Led by Zac Einerson, SafeAbroad’s Client Engagement Lead, the session introduced a preventive mental health framework that integrates student development, health and safety, and risk management throughout the entire education abroad experience: from pre-departure preparation and readiness assessments to in-country support, coordinated intervention, and post-program evaluation. Through case studies and audience discussion, participants explored practical approaches to strengthen preparedness, improve communication, and establish systems that help prevent concerns from becoming crises.

Throughout the presentation, attendees were encouraged to move beyond crisis response by identifying one practical improvement they could implement at their own institution. The session emphasized that meaningful progress often begins with small, achievable actions, whether creating clearer protocols, strengthening communication, expanding staff training, or improving coordination among institutional partners.

SafeAbroad thanks NAFSA and everyone who attended the session for contributing to an engaging discussion on the future of student mental health abroad. As institutions continue to navigate evolving student needs, SafeAbroad remains committed to providing practical resources, professional development, and evidence-informed solutions that help education abroad professionals strengthen prevention, preparedness, and student support.
