Mental Health

When traveling abroad, remember that your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

When going abroad, stress is to be expected.
Stress will manifest in different ways for different people. It may also kick-start or worsen pre-existing mental health issues.

If you find yourself overwhelmed or struggling while abroad, here are some DO’s and DON’Ts:
– If you need immediate help, contact the nearest U.S. Embassy.
– Reach out to your program leader, friends and family.
– Don’t isolate yourself.
– Take time to relax after traveling and maintain a healthy routine
– Don’t overwhelm yourself.

If you are worried about your mental health, or just want more information, discuss your upcoming travel with your doctor; do not skip the doctor’s appointment. Your doctor can help you transition and provide advice.
Culture shock is a very natural phenomenon that can be expected when a person moves from a familiar environment to a new setting where language, food, climate, and even people’s actions, are different.

Time zone changes may also exacerbate feelings of culture shock. To minimize impact, try to stay flexible, be patient with yourself and others, and don’t isolate yourself — other students in your program are going through the same thing!
Culture shock comes with a few phases that may last a few days.
Give yourself time to experience the phases naturally.

Phase 1 is Euphoria. The initial impact of the culture creates excitement for travelers.
Phase 2 is Frustration. Travelers may become frustrated with the differences and things may not go as planned. You may feel out of place and confused.
Phase 3 is Shock. Travelers may attempt to isolate themselves and surround themselves with familiarity.
Phase 4 is Adaptation. After the shock, travelers recognize and accept the differences between cultures and work through uncomfortability.
Phase 5 is Reverse Culture Shock. Travelers may accept and become used to their new surroundings, thus experiencing this process again when returning home.
