Emergencies and accidents can happen anywhere. The best thing you can do is be prepared in the event you find yourself in trouble while abroad.

Familiarize yourself with local hospitals and the U.S. Embassy. Your first call should be to your country’s equivalent of 911, if needed. Call your program leader as well.
The U.S. Embassy can put you in contact with your friends, family, or employer in the event of an emergency. They can also help you locate medical services as needed. It is important to note that the U.S. Embassy will NOT provide you with medical services, they can only recommend them.
