Wind-driven wildfires burning since July 29 have killed three firefighters and displaced thousands in Greece. A blaze in Rethymno, Crete has burned roughly 11,000 acres and forced 8,000 evacuations. On July 31, fires reached western Attica, as well as Aspropyrgos and Mount Poikilo inside Athens’ urban limits. Fires also remain active on Paros, Achaia and Argolida, with a Category 5 (extreme) fire risk forecast for Attica, Evia, Crete and the Cyclades on August 1.
