Financial Responsibilities

Controlling your finances and spending is difficult while studying abroad, but there are some tips to help you remain financially responsible.

Before traveling abroad, be sure you understand the finances it takes.

This includes hotels, transportation, food, etc. You should map out your expenses before traveling. Take side excursions, basic needs, and extra spending into account. It is always smart to bring extra money for emergencies. Always have a backup way to access financials in the event you need extra funds.
Always notify your bank of your travels and the timeline you plan to be abroad prior to leaving. They may lock your card if they believe there is any fraudulent activity.

Write down your bank’s emergency number in the event your card is stolen or you suspect your information has been stolen. Keep the charges on the bank cards in mind while abroad and educate yourself on fees your bank may apply for using an ATM not associated with your bank or any foreign use fees.
ATM’s are risky. If you are using an ATM, take a close look at the machine before using it.

Avoid using ATMs that are not linked to a bank. As always, cover the keypad with your hand while typing your PIN number. Never let anyone help you with your transaction.
Not all countries will take credit cards.

You should be prepared to rely on cash. If your trip is long-term, you should consider opening a bank account in your host country.
