Documentation

It is important to have the appropriate documentation with you before leaving for the airport. In some cases, if you don’t have the right paperwork, you may not be allowed on your trip abroad. If you do not have the proper documentation, you may also not be able to get back into the United States very easily.

The most important document you need is your passport. Apply for your passport as soon as possible. The process is very easy and can be done at your local post office. Allow for an appropriate amount of time to receive your physical passport, as it may take 4 to 8 weeks. It must be valid throughout your entire trip and at the very least, 6 months after your return from your trip.

In some cases, you may need to apply for a visa. Depending on the length of your trip, this may be necessary. A trip over 90 days requires a visa and a valid passport. You must also have an acceptance letter from your host university in order to apply. You should also bring your insurance card, itinerary, and contact card in the event you need to reach people at home or seek medical attention.
