In recent weeks Peru has faced floods that have prompted travel disruptions, evacuations, and impacts on public safety. Thousands of citizens in Peru have sought shelter from these storms, where nearly 300 districts have declared states of emergency. Major roadways have been flooded, leading to the stranding of vehicles and other means of transportation. Significant disruptions are expected in Buenos Aires in particular, but other urban areas will also experience smaller disruptions from protests. Police may use force to disperse protesters. Travelers are advised to avoid protest areas, especially Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, and limit travel through Buenos Aires after dark. If protests become violent, travelers are advised to leave the area immediately and return to their hotels or living accommodations. • Peru: Health Advisory | Peru health authorities warn of increased leptospirosis risk over the coming weeks following nationwide flooding and above-average rainfall. Above-average rainfall and flooding have led to a significantly increased risk of leptospirosis across Peru which prompted the warning on March 21. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease typically transmitted through contact with untreated water—such as rivers, lakes, floodwaters, or stagnant puddles—contaminated by animal urine. While symptoms are often mild and flu-like, the infection can become severe and become deadly if left untreated. Local health authorities report that the number of infections since the beginning of 2026 is already higher than typical for this time of year. SafeAbroad travelers are advised to strictly avoid contact with potentially contaminated water, including puddles or stagnant floodwaters, throughout Peru. Practice rigorous hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap and thoroughly cleaning any skin cuts or abrasions that may have been exposed.

Democrats Abroad Japan regularly organizes small-scale political events in Tokyo, often involving expatriates and local supporters. Public demonstrations in Tokyo are generally well-regulated and peaceful, with police managing crowd flow; however, gatherings near busy transit hubs such as Shimo-Kitazawa Station can increase pedestrian congestion and slow movement in surrounding streets. Travelers are advised to avoid the immediate protest area and use alternate routes around Shimo-Kitazawa Station. • Kenya: Travel Advisory | Aviation workers will strike nationwide in Kenya on March 25, disrupting flights and airport operations. The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) consists of airport ground staff, technicians, and support personnel. The strike follows a labor dispute with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) over wages, union recognition, and alleged unfair dismissals, as unions claim authorities failed to honor a February return-to-work agreement. Previous aviation-sector strikes in Kenya have caused flight delays, cancellations, and reduced airport services, particularly at major hubs such as Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi) and Moi International Airport (Mombasa). Widespread participation may disrupt passenger processing and air traffic support services. SafeAbroad travelers are advised to confirm flight schedules with airlines and allow for additional travel time. Travelers should monitor local media for updates.
  • Middle East: Travel Advisory Multiple airlines are canceling flights to the Middle East until late May. British Airways has canceled all flights between London Heathrow and Tel Aviv, Bahrain, Amman, and Dubai until May 31. Authorities report that Dubai International Airport is currently operating at 40-45% of normal traffic movement and has resumed some travel to select destinations. They should also continue to monitor their flight status for last-minute delays and cancellations.
  • Cape Town, South Africa: Travel Advisory Taxi protests are expected to bring disruptions to transportation in the Cape Town area of South Africa this coming week. Cape Town has had multiple taxi protest actions and strikes within the last week, and these are expected to continue. This has mainly affected public transportation from suburbs to city centers as well as residential areas to business districts. Within the coming week, there is a possibility of more protests, sudden taxi route shutdowns, and delays or cancellations of taxi services. This may have a secondary effect in the form of overcrowding in buses and trains, as well as heavier traffic due to a possible increase in private cars on highways and roads. As of March 21, local authorities and companies have deployed “peace ambassadors” in order to dissuade any upcoming protests. SafeAbroad travelers are advised to confirm routes before setting out and plan for the sudden cancellation of taxi services. Travelers are also advised to monitor local news and social media for upcoming taxi protests and strikes.
  • Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Security Advisory Expect heightened security as well as traffic and travel disruptions surrounding the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on March 28 due to the Dubai World Cup horse racing meet. Despite the recent Iranian and the broader Middle East conflict, the Dubai World Cup horse racing meet is still expected to proceed as scheduled, with many of the international participants arriving sometime this upcoming week. Road closures near the racetrack and the deployment of extra police officers are expected. SafeAbroad travelers are advised to follow official directives and monitor local news and social media for updates on the race times. Travelers are also advised to avoid the area due to possible traffic and confirm routes before setting out.
