The US embassy issued health alert in Jordan on July 1 amid reports of methanol poisoning linked to alcoholic beverages.

Incident Details

On July 1, the U.S. Embassy in Jordan released a health alert due to reports of methanol poisoning linked to locally produced alcoholic beverages.  So far there have been 56 reports of methanol poisonings that has left 47 undergoing treatment and nine dead.

Traveler Safety

SafeAbroad travelers should avoid all locally produced alcoholic beverages. Be aware of methanol poisoning symptoms and go to a hospital immediately if experiencing nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of consciousness and/or blindness. Check the US Embassy website for all potentially compromised beverages.
