Expect heightened security in Guanajuato state, Mexico, after a cartel attack during a religious festival killed 12 on June 24.

Incident Details

On June 24, gunmen opened fire on a celebration of St. John the Baptist in the city of Irapuato. The state of Guanajuato experiences high rates of violent crime, largely due to an ongoing turf war between rival cartels. Additional federal and state security forces have been deployed throughout Guanajuato. Retaliatory attacks are possible in the coming weeks. 

Traveler Safety

Travelers should exercise increased caution in the coming weeks, especially when traveling along major highways. Most violence is concentrated along the industrial corridor between Leon and Celaya, while tourist centers in Guanajuato City and San Miguel de Allende have been mostly unaffected.
