Supporters of opposition presidential candidate called for nationwide protests starting 16 February, with marches and rallies in Quito on 17 February. Thousands of people could participate in the demonstrations and heightened security is likely near all large protests. Clashes between police and protests are possible.

Due to COVID-19 also known as the Coronavirus, markets and vendors were instructed to cease business operations. Police were dispatched to enforce these regulations where tear gas and batons were used to disperse individuals who were protesting government mandates.
