When traveling abroad, you want to assure that the place you are staying is safe.

While abroad, your University program will provide housing in a variety of accommodations; including traditional dorms or hotels.
If you travel during your free time, you may need to find your own accommodations. Check out AirBnB’s, homestays, or any local, but creditable, hotels or hostels. Read reviews before booking an accommodation.

Hotels
If staying in a hotel, make sure you keep the room locked while you are away or inside. Inquire about cleaning services and when/how they enter your room. Many hotels use real keys and request that they stay inside the hotel. Keep all valuables and documents locked up, either in a safe, hidden place, or in a safe. Stay stay with your luggage at check-in and check-out. Finally, ask for a business card when you arrive at the hotel and keep it on you at all times.
University Housing (Dorm)
If staying in a dorm, make sure you keep the dorm locked while you are away or inside, and do not let people who do not live in the building inside. Keep all of your documents and valuables in a safe area or locked up. Review all dorm policies and procedures.
Homestay/AirBnB
If you are residing in a homestay or AirBnB, discuss all house rules within the first few days you are there. You should report anything suspicious to your university coordinators. You should also research the location and reviews before agreeing to accommodations. It is also recommended that you communicate with the host before arrival and, of course, keep your room or house locked and store all valuables in a safe place.
