Before traveling you should familiarize yourself with the cultural differences of the US to your destination. Things you may do here without thinking can make you stand out or are considered inappropriate elsewhere.

– Reading newspapers from your host country is a great way to learn about current events in that area.
– Specifically, do research about cultural practices in your host country so that you don’t stand out.
– Before you arrive, review your materials and make sure you know a few key phrases to communicate if your host country speaks a different language.

Upon arrival, you are subject to any and all laws of your host country. Contact the Bureau of Consular Affairs if you find yourself in a legal problem. Exercise good judgement and keep the University’s travel policy in mind while abroad.
