Severe Weather to Affect China Between August 6 and 9

Rounds of heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms are forecasted to affect parts of Northern and Eastern China between August 6 and 9. The China Meteorological Administration has already issued bulletins for heavy rain, flooding, and convective storms across parts of the affected areas. The storms will be capable of producing strong winds, heavy rainfall, and small hail. Gusts in excess of 97 kph (60 mph) are possible and power outages and flooding are likely.

Protests Across Poland to Take Place on August 7

The Strike of the Angry and Movement of Eight Stars have called for protests in Warsaw, Katowice, Koszalin, Krakow, and Lublin on 7 August at 18:00 local time. The purpose of these demonstrations is to express dissatisfaction with the leadership and policies of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party and frustration with the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. While expectations for violence are generally low, the frustrated nature of the demonstrations may lead to escalation resulting in violence.

Demonstrations in Colombia on August 6

Various civic organizations have called for demonstrations in the major urban centers of Bogota, Bucaramanga, Monteria, and Yopal on August 6 beginning at 9:00 local time. The demonstrations have been organized to protest against the Supreme Court’s decision that placed former President Álvaro Uribe under house arrest while conducting an investigation into fraud and bribery of witnesses. Protest caravans and other travel disruptions may occur in these areas.

Nationwide Protests in South Korea to Take Place August 7

Protesters are likely to gather outside hospitals and other medical facilities. Toxic Gases in Beirut Remain a Health Risk Following Explosions in Beirut, Lebanon on August 4

In the aftermath of two major explosions in Beirut killing 100 and leaving over 4,000 wounded, it has been reported as of August 5 that the release of toxic gases due to the blast poses a health risk. The explosions, reportedly caused by large volumes of ammonium nitrate being stored in a warehouse left several areas without electricity and damaged some embassies. The number of casualties is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.

Authorities have issued red-level warnings for thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds for eastern Chiapas, northern Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, Federal, and Michoacan.

Rival Protests in Thailand Likely to Continue Until Mid-August

Protests are will likely occur near government buildings, parks, or public squares. Localized transport disruptions are likely due to demonstrations. Additionally, clashes are possible between rival groups, protesters, and security personnel.

Tropical Depression Sinlaku to Cause Flashfloods and Landslides in Vietnam Possibly Until August 8

On August 2, the passage of Tropical Depression Sinlaku (locally known as No. 02) has made landfall between Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces. Sinlaku is forecasted to move further inland, in a north-western direction, and weaken into a low-pressure system in northern Laos. Sinlaku will bring heavy rain and strong winds until at least August 8, which will likely result in flash floods and landslides.

Protest Set to Occur in Rome, Italy on August 4

Labor unions have scheduled a protest to occur at Piazza Barberini in Rome on August 4 at 10:00 local time in support of employees of the now liquidated Air Italy. Demonstrations will move to the Department of Labor and the Department of Transportation later in the day. COVID-19 related restrictions will be in place and attendance should be limited to the approved 50-100 persons but travel delays in the area are still likely.
