On 15 October, various student organizations have called for protests to denounce the government’s repressive attitude after students experienced police brutality during a protest outside of the Ministry of Education headquarters on 9 October. Students are expected to gather near the Propylaea of the University of Athens at 12:00 local time, demanding for the implementation of safety protocols in educational institutions.

Tropical Storm Nangka’s Landfall in Vietnam on October 14 to Leave Flooding and Possible Landslides

Tropical Storm Nangka is expected to make landfall in North-Central Vietnam on the 14th of October. Nangka is expected to weaken before making landfall, but to add to the flooding that remains in the wake of Tropical Storm Linfa. More flooding and possible landslides are expected around the Central and Northern parts of the country in the wake of the torrential rainfall.

Protests in France to Continue Through October 19

The Extinction Rebellion (XR) environmental activist group has announced plans to carry out a week of civil disobedience in France from 11-19 October. Rallies have been scheduled in Paris, Bordeaux (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region), and Lyon (Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region). Previous demonstrations have seen the intentional blocking of roads and the disrupting of public transit services.

Tropical Cyclone Nangka to Make Landfall in China Between October 12 and October 14

Between 12 October-14 October, Tropical Cyclone Nangka is expected to make landfall on Wanning, China. Typhoon warnings have been issued for Hainan and Guangxi province. Anticipate heavy rain and associated disruptions in the southern provinces. Flight disruptions are possible at Hainan’s Haikou Meilan, Sanya Phoenix, and Guangxi’s Nanning Wuxu international airports.

Pro-Democracy Demonstration in Bangkok, Thailand on October 14

Travelers in Bangkok should plan journeys accounting for disruption due to a pro-democracy demonstration on 14 October. At least 30 pro-democracy groups will gather at 14:00 local time at the Democracy Monument in the Phra Nakhon district. Police are expected to deploy over 3,000 officers to monitor the demonstration. Significant travel disruption can be expected in the Phra Nakhon district.

Strikes in Costa Rica on October 14 to Go Nationwide October 19

Several unions are staging strikes throughout Costa Rica on 14 and 19 October to oppose the government’s transactions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Demonstrations are planned to occur along Juan Santamaria Airport road at 09:00 local time 14 October and nationwide beginning 08:00 local time 19 October.

Typhoon Chan-hom Disrupting Japan Through October 11

Typhoon Chan-hom is expected to cause disruption throughout Japan from 8 October through 11 October. Okinawa, Kyushu, and parts of Honshu island are expected to be most affected. Strong wind and high tide warnings are in place for coastal areas. Coastal flooding, heavy rain, and strong winds are also expected in central and southern Honshu.
