Fatalities and People Missing in West Germany and Belgium on July 16 Due to Intense Floods

As of 16 July, at least 100 people have been killed in Germany, 22 in Belgium, and over 1,500 have been reported missing due to heavy rainfall. The areas most heavily affected by the rain are Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia where 4,500 residents were evacuated due to structural damage to the Steinbach dam, and Saarland. Flash flooding and landslides have been occurring throughout the region.

Protests on July 14 in Paris, France in Addition to Bastille Day

Yellow vest protestors plan to protest in Paris on 14 July. Participants are expected to gather at Champs-Elysees at 10:00 local time. A march will also be staged at 15:00, where participants will gather at Place de Clichy before marching to Place de la Republique. Protests are against the implementation of the Health Pass, providing COVID-19 vaccination, and will take place in addition to Bastille Day events.

Heatwave Across Spain from July 10-11

Temperatures are expected to reach 105°F (44°C) across southern Spain from 10-11 July 2021. This will increase the likelihood of heat-related illness in locations that lack adequate ventilation and air conditioning.

Adverse Weather in Japan to Create Possible Travel Disruptions Through July 9

Adverse weather conditions in the coming hours on 8 July are expected to cause travel disruption throughout the Western and Central areas of Japan. These weather conditions are likely to cause floods, landslides, and electrical outages. There are reports of ongoing disruptions on train lines and could lead to flight disruption in the Kansai International Airport and Hiroshima Airport.
