On April 11, public and private sector workers will strike across Italy.

On April 11th, unionized employees from both the public and private sectors of the Italian General Workers’ Confederation (CGIL) will go on a nationwide strike. They are demanding higher wages and protesting against public health and tax reforms. The strike is expected to cause disruptions in transportation, government operations, healthcare, and education. Violent protests are likely to be met with force by police. 

The Week Ahead: February 26, 2024

• England, United Kingdom: Health Advisory | From February 24-28, junior doctors in England will strike over low pay, causing major disruptions in emergency departments. Travelers should prepare for longer wait times in emergency departments and reconfirm health appointments. 
• São Paulo, Brazil: Protest Advisory | On February 25 at the Museum of Art, protesters plan to gather in support of former President Bolsonaro. The event is expected to draw large crowds. Travelers should plan alternative routes in advance to circumvent demonstrations.
• Nationwide, South Korea: Health | From February 25 through March 3, travelers in South Korea should expect severe medical disruptions from doctors striking over a planned increase in the number of physicians nationwide. The medical disaster alert level has been raised to “serious,” which is the highest level on a four-tier scale. Demonstrations will likely be broken up by the police. Travelers should confirm medical appointments and plan for emergencies by noting which facilities are open. 
• Chad: Protest Advisory | Until February 26, nationwide strikes will continue to condemn the rising cost of living. Previous protests occurred at public institutions and were dispersed by authorities with tear gas. Travelers should avoid all demonstrations and monitor the local media for updates.

The Week Ahead: February 19, 2024

• Madrid, Spain: Protest Advisory | On February 21, a protest involving tractor convoys is expected to take place outside the Ministry of Agriculture. Travelers should expect travel disruptions and avoid all demonstrations by planning alternative routes.
• Nationwide, Haiti: Protest Advisory | Over the coming days, expect nationwide protests demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister. Past protests became violent, resulting in multiple deaths. Travelers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and monitor local media for updates.
• Nationwide, Indonesia: Security Advisory | Following the general elections on February 14 and leading up to the release of the results on March 20, expect heightened security across Indonesia. Protests are likely. Travelers should carry ID with them at all times and obey all security directives. 
• Nicosia and Limassol, Cyprus: Protest Advisory | On February 24, protests will occur in support of Ukraine and denouncing Russia’s invasion. Protestors are expected to gather outside the Russian Embassy in Nicosia and outside the Consulate General of Russia in Limassol. Travelers should not participate in protests, avoid large crowds, plan routes around protests, and monitor the media for updates.

From February 9 to March 10, Polish farmers will protest against EU agricultural policies across Poland nationwide, triggering major roadblocks.

From February 9 to March 10, planned demonstrations by Polish farmers are expected to take place across Poland nationwide. Farmers will denounce agricultural policies put into place by the European Union. Throughout this month-long period, protesters will block major travel routes throughout the country, including border crossings with Ukraine. Given previous incidents, clashes between protesters and law enforcement officials are likely.

Large anti-far right protests to cause travel disruptions in Berlin and Dresden, Germany through February 13.

Through February 13, demonstrations against the far-right will continue to occur in Dresden and Berlin. The protests come in response to the growing success of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. On February 3, protesters in Berlin blocked the entrance to the Reichstag. Previous protests have drawn over 100,000 people.

An aircraft collision on January 2 at Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport left seventeen Japan Airlines passengers wounded. Five Japanese Coast Guard aircraft crew members were killed, with one seriously wounded.

At 5:47 PM, January 2, Japan Airlines flight 516 collided with a Japanese Coast Guard aircraft while landing at Haneda Airport. Flight 516 suffered a fire, which destroyed the aircraft. All 379 passengers and crew of flight 516 were evacuated with 17 injuries. Five of six Coast Guard aircraft crew members were killed. All four runways were initially closed after the incident, with flights rerouting to Narita International Airport, but three runways have reopened.
