Costa Rica is experiencing an increase in dengue fever cases.

Incident Details

Cases of dengue fever, a disease transmitted by infected mosquito bites, are increasing in Costa Rica with 19,938 cases this year compared to 7,939 cases this time last year. The province of Alajuela is most affected. Symptoms include fever along with headaches, pain behind eyes, muscle/joint pain, rash, easy bruising, and/or nose or gum bleeding.

Traveler Safety

Travelers should take measures to prevent mosquito bites and seek medical attention if symptoms develop within two weeks of a bite. Do not use aspirin or ibuprofen to ease symptoms as these medicines can increase bleeding.
